Why does putting a second pair of socks on do almost nothing?

If you are the one in the house who is always cold, and it is always the feet first, there is a straightforward reason the socks have never quite fixed it — and it is not that you need thicker ones.

Stage one · you already know all of this

Are you the person in your house who is always cold?

Then you already know the rest of this by heart.

You have a pair of bed socks. You have probably got two pairs on right now. There is a hot water bottle somewhere in the bed and it went lukewarm an hour ago. You have worked out which side of the couch is warmer. You put your feet under the dog, or under whoever will let you. And the tiled floor in the morning is something you brace for before you put a foot down.

Nobody treats this as a real problem, including you. It is just what your feet do.

But it is the reason you are still awake at eleven o’clock, and it is the reason the first twenty minutes of the day are worse than they need to be.

Stage two · the bit nobody explains

A sock is insulation. Insulation is not a source.

Here is the whole thing in three lines, and once you have read it you will not be able to unsee it.

Insulation does not make warmth. All it does is slow down the escape of warmth that is already there.

Put a thick sock on a warm foot and it stays warm, because there is plenty to hold on to. Put exactly the same sock on a cold foot and you have carefully insulated the cold.

Which is why the second pair of socks disappointed you. You did not need more insulation. You had plenty. What you did not have was anything producing heat in the first place — and a cold foot, by definition, is a foot that is not producing much.

Run down the list of everything you have tried and you will find the same thing is true of all of it. Bed socks: insulation. Slippers: insulation. A blanket over the feet: insulation. The doubled-up socks: more insulation.

Not one of them is a source. Every one of them is a jumper for your feet.

Stage three · the things that are a source

And why each of them is annoying enough that you stopped

There are things that genuinely produce heat rather than trap it, and you have tried most of them too. The problem is never that they do not work. It is that each one costs you something — and it is always the same something: you have to go and do a thing first.

A hot water bottle works, and it is gone in an hour, and you have to get up and boil a kettle to have one.

An electric blanket or a heat pad works, and it has a cord running across the floor to the nearest socket, which in most living rooms is exactly where you walk.

A footbath works, and then you have a basin of cooling water to carry to the sink and your feet are wet.

A warm-feet routine you cannot be bothered doing is not a solution. It is a thing in the cupboard.

Which is the whole design brief for a heated slide. It is a source, like the water bottle. It has no cord, unlike the heat pad. There is nothing to boil, fill, carry or empty. You put your feet in it, set the number you want, and it turns itself off ten minutes later.

Stage four · being straight with you

What we are not going to tell you

There is a lot of red light sold online at the moment, and a good deal of it is sold on promises about your circulation, your nerves, your swelling and conditions you may have been told you have. Some of those pages carry thousands of reviews and a survey statistic in a big round percentage.

We are not going to do that, and it costs us something to say so.

There is real published research into 660nm light and human tissue. There is not the evidence to stand here and tell you what a slipper will do to a medical condition, and anyone who does is either guessing or hoping you will not check.

Buy these for warm feet. That is the claim. If they turn out to do more for you than that, good — but it is not what we sold you.

When this is the wrong thing to buy — please read this part

If your feet are simply cold, and warm up fine once something warms them, this is built for exactly that.

Do not buy it, and speak to a doctor, if any of the following is true. Your feet are cold and numb, or you have reduced sensation in them for any reason — including diabetes or nerve damage — because you may not feel warmth building the way someone else would. One foot is consistently colder than the other. Your feet change colour, hurt at rest, or are slow to heal when the skin breaks.

Those are all worth having looked at properly, and a warm slipper is not the answer to any of them. We would rather tell you now than take your money.

Usually two people in the house

In most households there is one person who is always cold and one who thinks the heating is already up too high. Occasionally there are two of the first kind, and they have been fighting over the one hot water bottle for years.

One pair is $89.99. Two pairs are $139.99, so the second pair costs $50 instead of $89.99.

Thirty nights. Two things they have to do.

This is not a fourteen-day box-unopened return. You get thirty nights from delivery to actually wear them, and in that time they have to do two things.

One — your feet have to actually get warm, on the first night, inside the ten minutes. Not warmer in six weeks. Warm, that evening. Two — you have to still be reaching for them in week four, because the only cold-feet solution that works is one you can be bothered using.

Miss either one and one email sorts it. You cover return postage on a change of mind; we cover it if they are faulty.
